PADI Open Water Diver Course – Frequently Asked Questions
The course is completed over 3 days, including theory, pool training, and four open water dives in the Whitsunday Islands.
No prior diving experience is required. The PADI Open Water Diver course is designed for beginners and teaches all the essential skills needed to dive safely.
Yes. To complete the PADI Open Water Diver course, participants must demonstrate basic swimming ability. This includes swimming 200 metres without stopping (or 300 metres using mask, snorkel and fins) and floating or treading water for 10 minutes. These skills help ensure divers are comfortable and safe in the water.
Pool training takes place at our training facility in Cannonvale, just 10 minutes from Airlie Beach. We offer complimentary courtesy transfers to and from our training facility, making it easy for guests staying in Airlie Beach to join the course.
Your four open water training dives take place around the Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef, exploring beautiful coral reef sites from our dive boat.
The minimum age to complete the PADI Open Water Diver course is 10 years old.
Yes. The course includes all required scuba equipment, tanks, weights, and professional instruction.
Yes. All participants must complete a standard scuba diving medical questionnaire before taking part in any diving activity. Certain medical conditions may require clearance from a doctor prior to diving. If you answer “Yes” to any of the medical questions, physician approval may be required. The medical questionnaire is available for download at the bottom of our website.

The Whitsunday Islands are home to a wide variety of marine life, including reef sharks. These sharks are generally small, shy, and not dangerous to divers. Seeing a reef shark can actually be a highlight of the dive, and encounters are calm and safe.
Marine stingers can occur in tropical waters during the warmer months. When scuba diving, however, divers wear full exposure protection such as wetsuits, which greatly reduces the risk of stings. Our crew monitors conditions carefully and will advise guests if additional precautions are recommended.
